Learning To Be Free

Headlines on the front page of the morning paper read:

“After 35 year wait, learning to be free”

The article tells the tragic story of a young man who,  at 18, is falsely accused of raping a 9 year old boy and sentenced to life in prison.  Now, at age 54, James Bain is a free man.  He has been set free by DNA evidence that was finally brought before the court on Dec 17, 2009.

I know these things happen in our judicial system, but when I hear the stories, I’m never without a profound feeling of disbelief and sadness.   Yet. this time,  what really struck me was the quote from Jim Bain,

” Part of me went into hibernation in prison.  But every day, I’m waking up a little more.  I can see freedom,  smell it,  taste it.  But sometimes freedom and I are not one.”

For Jim, the stark difference between prison and his new found freedom are glaring.  He now has a king size mattress, but still sleeps in a small corner of the bed.  He can leave the house and venture out  as far as he wants…yet still walks but a few yards and then returns.  He doesn’t know how to live the freedom he’s been given.

But what about you and me???   I think we often remain prisoners even when we’ve been set  free.  We, too, are slow to wake up to the freedom we have been given.  But why???

Why – when we accept Christ as our savior – do we keep living as if we are still in bondage?

Why – when we are set free by Christ’s finished work on the cross – do we allow the past to dictate our future?

Could it be our  limiting beliefs…past mistakes…childhood wounding…addictions…fears… failures… unbelief…lack of clear purpose… (You fill in the blank___________)???

What holds you in bondage?  What keeps ‘you and freedom from being one’ ?

Yes, old habits die hard…and it’s tough working through all your old ‘junk’…but God has a plan for your life and knowing your  purpose can be a huge part of making sense of it all.

Why not let 2010 be your year of  FREEDOM and PURPOSE. Jim Bain says,  see it , smell it, taste it – and  I would add… LIVE IT!!!

So, think about this…if you were to write your life as a head line…how would it read?

How many years until you learn to be free?

I seeks to help others discover their purpose and find a message of hope through Identity and Destiny. God is allowing me to use all of my story – even the trials and pain. The kind of hope that can only come from finding a way to walk victoriously through the hard places in life. And what I have learned is this…if you will allow Him…God wants to use YOU to help others – not in spite of your past – but because of it!!!

Hearing of a story like this in this context really puts my own situation in perspective. I may have limiting beliefs, but are they actual physical prison bars?

My answer is ‘no’ and I’m grateful for it.

I’m still going to need some help cutting through them and I have every hope that you guys will provide me with the tools and plans I need to make my escape.

I look forward to our next meeting.
